The Wärtsilä 31 is available in 8 to 16 cylinder configurations and has a power output ranging from 4.7 to 9.8 MW, at 720 and 750 rpm.

The engine can be run on either natural gas, light fuel oil (LFO), or heavy fuel oil (HFO), and can smoothly switch between fuels whilst operating. It is designed to provide the same output regardless of the fuel.

The Wärtsilä 32 was developed in response to a need in the market for a new engine in the 320 mm cylinder bore class and since 1998 more than 2500 of these engines have been sold to the marine market, in total more than 4500 Wärtsilä 32 bore engines have been delivered to the marine market since the 1980s.


The Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine is the ultimate ‘fuel flexibility’ solution. It is a four-stroke . engine that runs on light fuel oil (LFO) or heavy fuel oil (HFO), and can switch over from gas to LFO/HFO and vice versa smoothly during engine operation.
